first, he cannot locate the battery since it is on the motherboard and
unless you open the case you cannot get at it. Also, just
disconnecting the battery won't necessarily resolve the BIOS password
since some motherboards put the password into flash ROM and you
actually have to change a jumper then power it up to erase the
password. - I am not sure whether the HP 6530b fits that category or
not.

Next, he does not need to access the BIOS to encrypt the hard drive.
That option is available as a windows folder property and is available
with WinXP and Vista - no extra software required. But beware, if he
is wanting to change his windows login password he would need to
unencrypt his data first, change his password, then re-encrypt
(otherwise he will not be able to access his data)
