Testdisk will not remove your data on your hard disk. Then when you run you have to choose no log, then select the external drive and press intel, then select the partitions you want to restore(If your partition isn't listed then do a deep search. After that you can choose the option write to write the master boot record. It will also ask in one step whether your partition was done in vista you should select no if it is formatted under XP. Then after writing master boot record it will ask you to restart and then you will have your files back.
