He indicated it is an Hitachi 500GB.
Most likely the noise is from head movement. The longer the movement
the louder the noise and if the disk is fragmented (especially the
large files - I am presuming they are quite large in the order of
100's of MB) then there will most likely be quite a large amount of
movement of the heads. So, depending upon the overall acoustic
properties of the drive it is really quite conceivable that what would
happen is exactly what he is describing.
Has the disk been defragged? If, after defragging does the noise
characteristics change?
