Of course you could simply install an antivirus program which will protect you from the majority of problems. Once you have a good AV program (I recommend Microsoft Security Essentials if you are running a legal copy of Windows) you will still have to be a bit careful, but unless you go to really bad web sites or download everything you see, you should be safe.
