That's right, European cars had the much brighter and better designed headlights for years before the U.S. As I recall, halogen lights were illegal in this country at that time, essentially because there were no U.S. manufacturers making them. Eventually Sylvania, I think, started making them and all of a sudden it was a good idea, and legal. A nice little example of corporations holding back something that would benefit the public because it did not benefit a U.S. corporation.
Nah, European cars used bulb and reflector technology which basicly sucked, while Americans preferred the more wasteful technology of the sealed beam headlight. In the early 70s bulb technology improved to the point where one could get some really bright, reliable bulbs for motorcycles and sports cars, the downside was heat. They burned flesh, melted paint, and occasionaly caught fire. I put an expensive set of quartz - iodine bulbs on my 72 Vette but had to remember to shut them down while stopped at a light. They made steam in the rain and could be felt from 4 feet away. They also made night into day and immediately improved the manners of those who failed to dim their headlights or get out of the hammer lane.
