I would suggest getting some fine alligator clips and soldering/
attaching those to a USB cable. and clipping the cable to the remnants
of your USB drive. That way you aren't depending too highly on your
soldering expertise and risking/ stressing the all important drive any
further than it is already...

Yes, this would work. However, if you are asking such a question you
probably do not have the soldering skill to do the job without damaging
the the PCB.
If the connector completely broken off? If you still have even a little
bit of the 4 metal contacts in place you might be able to jam it into a
USB socket. The outside metal seath is not required.
