No. Install time. If older stuff is loaded after newer stuff it can 
overwrite new modules with older modules, creating a mess.

Sometimes you may see two listed, one TWAIN and one not. All I care about 
is seeing one that works.

Definitely. This is a typical problem with drivers. Bits and pieces of 
old and new drivers all trying to grab the scanner at the same time and 
causing a lock up. Do all you can to clear it all out before you install 
anything. Consider if anything else might have installed its own scanner 
drivers. When you have completed a good fumigation, then install just one 
driver.
