The CS3 should be faster when it's completely native. A beta is not ready for prime time, as in the message I see when I download alpha/beta nightly builds of Mozilla SeaMonkey, "...Mozilla might crash on startup. It might delete all your files and cause your computer to burst into flames..." I don't know if the Intel native CS3 is ready for Macs. I'm still using Photoshop 7 and ID 2. I hate Adobe Illustrator [even more user hostile than Quark XPress], so I haven't updated it in ages. Might get CS2 one of these days when there's a good deal on eBay. There's not much reason to upgrade unless the older version is broken or doesn't work in Leopard. I don't see new features that I need or want.
I've done some professional photography over the years. Just when I feel comfortable with the blazing speed of my new computer, a faster, smarter version comes out. Kind of makes me nostalgic for the darkroom, red lights, and chemicals. Ah for the good old days of printing photos with gels [gel process], one color at a time.
I'm waiting until mid Sept to get the base MacBook [don't need another DVD burner] and my free [after rebate] red or pink Nano [my husband's a teacher]. Another reason for waiting is this: If Apple announces in September that Leopard will be released in October, buyers of Macs after the announcement can get a free upgrade to the new OS. I think it will be after the free Nano deal expires, though.
If I were doing volume photo processing or video, I'd get the MacBook Pro or Mac Pro and hold out for a native CS3 with bugs ironed out. The older versions will do fine for now. Maxing out the RAM will help too. FWIW, I still have my G4/400, boosted to 1.6GHz, 1.2 GB RAM. It's a bit slow, but everything works fine. I want the MacBook for portability, and also since my husband's iBook died last week after he dropped it for the third time [broke the power port. I'd get an unlocked iPhone instead if I could since what I really need is a quadband GSM WiFi phone.
