Right. It is *not* SD that is being mandated, only that they replace
their analog transmitters with 'digital' ones. However, by then more
and more footage will be shot in various flavors of HD, so it'll
become more common gradually. Most of what we see on TV today is shot
in HD.

Once a station's digital facilities are in place, it won't cost them
any extra to broadcast in HD, so they will.

This conversion is not *supposed* to leave any 'dark' TVs when the
last analog transmitter is shut down on February 17, 2009. There will
be cheap converter boxes, and in fact there's a mandate to offer one
free box per household (that requests one).

However, at this point I wouldn't buy a new TV that doesn't
specifically offer the new "ATSC" tuner.
