In Windows or OS X or Linux it is my understanding that it is
recommended to stop/ unmount a USB mounted media card before removing
it at risk of corrupting the card index if it is being accessed when
you disconnect it.
For this purpose, there is the green arrow "Safely remove hardware icon"
in the XP system tray and throwing the desktop drive icon in the trash
in OSX.
Recently, a friend of mine just hosed a 4 GB SD disk of mine when she
was copying pics off it by failing to do this. She wasn't sure what
she was doing and plugged and unplugged it several times...
