Exactly.
A good reader will have an activity light (just like a floppy) that
will let you know this.
Some do, some don't ... and sometimes their lights work differently
I use card readers all the time and if I wait until the device is
finished I do not need to unmount it.
Agreed ... it gets tricky however when you have Window's AutoPlay etc...

I just discovered today that my new RX700 Epson printer which has card
slots on it, also will act as an external reader.

what she was doing and plugged and unplugged it several times...
