I replaced a 50G Hitachi 5400RPM drive with a 160G WD Scorpio, 5400 RPM in a ThinkPad with no adverse effects. That was in early May, the laptop runs most of the day every day. I suspect upgrading capacity would have minimal effect but upgrading speed to 7200 or even 10,000 RPM might draw more current.
