There is also a new class of SD cards ... not backwards compatible with older SD devices. I forget what they are called...

I found out that the new, faster, SD cards (the ones that say they are 50x or more faster than standard) won't always work with my old card reader. What happened to me is just as you describe. I bought a new card reader and the card could be read.

Maybe this is the cause, maybe the card itself is bad.
