... Is there a way for me to be able to locate an antenna upstairs, and
have its received signal wirelessly transmitted to my computer located
on the lower floor? I do not want to have to run ethernet cables up
there, nor would a long run of antenna cable from an external wireless
antenna be viable due to signal losses incurred over such a distance....

There are external antenna boosters that can plug into your WiFi card,
replacing the internal antenna on your computer. They work VERY well. You can
search for them yourself, or wait until I return to the US this weekend and I
can look it up for you. A friend was piggy backing on his next door neighbor's
network for a while and the booster worked spectacularly well until he decided
it was better to get his own broadband . ;-D

We're traveling now. I'm on a computer at a coffee house while my friend has
her PowerBook on their WiFi network. The best way to find open networks away
from home is to use a stumbler program. I use MacStumbler. I leave the computer
open slightly while walking or driving, with the volume turned up high. A voice
announces all available networks while a window displays whether it's open or
closed and how powerful the signal is.

Ask me again next week when I'm on my own computer. I have at least a dozen
links in my bookmarks.

  Betty
