A more interesting question would be: How well do these notebooks run
Mac OS and Linux?
Hey! I say I want to fight over hardware instead of OS, and you bring up
OSes. And from my personal experience (at an Apple store), I'd say very,
very fast for OS X. I've heard very good things about linux too.
Of course, any OS that won't install easily on any
modern computer should be eliminated from the competition.
Again, the subject line was "Fastest Vista notebook" which kinda
eliminates other OSes from the discussion. Besides, why would you
want to eliminate Windows off the bat? You can't install Vista
on many "modern"computers because of its hardware requirements,
and *any* version of Windows fails the "easily" part.
The article says this thing "sets speed records" but I don't see any
links to comparisons. People don't buy $3000 notebooks to run office
apps. Or do they? What does it *mean* to get 141fps in Farcry? Does
the Alienware only get 140???
No, the Alienware got 126 frames per second in Far Cry. See the other
computers in the article using the scroll at the top. That number is
mostly
meaningless to me, too, except as a possible indicator of how well it
might
process video, but the main number they cite is their PC WorldBench 6
Beta 2 score, which did beat its nearest competitor by only one point.
Anyway, new speed records are set and broken daily. Not big news.
What I found interesting was that Macs have been fastest since they
began testing, as evidenced by the phrase, "The fastest Windows
Vista notebook we've tested this year--or for that matter, ever--is a
Mac."
Apple has absolutely no reason to optimize their hardware for Vista,
and yet they best everyone who does have a reason. Why is this?

From PC World:

"The fastest Windows Vista notebook we've tested this year is a Mac.
Try that again: The fastest Windows Vista notebook we've tested this
year--or for that matter, ever--is a Mac. Not a Dell, not a
Toshiba, not
even an Alienware. "
