>Back when I owned a computer with a floppy drive many of the disks >I'd had laying around the house for years refused to work. I don't >consider that media reliable either. Anything needed for the IRS >should be on paper, in safe deposit box, or just a safe. It sounds >like it's time to bite the bullet and upgrade, not just the hardware, >but the software as well.
Yesterday I got a frantic call from someone who had to get an old project off of Zip disks, but few of their Zip disks were readable. Big panic. The data on the Zips should have been transferred to a more stable medium long ago. This was a management failure. Management should have picked a date and stated that this technology was now officially obsolete. All Zip drives were going to be discarded and all data on Zips transferred to more stable media and the Zip disks discarded. Taking this responsibility is why the IT manager gets paid the big bucks. When they don't do their job everyone's data is at risk. ************************************************************************ * ==> QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in <== * ==> the body of an email & send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] <== * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail?
