My Nikon has a proprietary battery. One of the reasons I rejected a
Canon Powershot was because it took 2 AA batteries, making it much
bigger, bulkier and heavier than I want to have for travel. I bought an
extra battery and keep them both charged so I've never run out of power
when I needed it. The Canons I'd consider are the Elph line--and TX1.
I've used SLRs for many years and am tired of the bulk/weight. The
smaller cameras are fine for most of my needs, even for print ads. If I
need to shoot something to be printed poster size, I'll plan ahead and
use the SLRs [Canon and Pentax]. For video, I use a Canon Elura, which
also uses SD cards for stills. After handling the TX1, I can imagine
giving away [or selling] my Nikon and replacing it with another Canon.
The Nikon camera, extra battery, 2 extra SD cards, card reader all fit
in a tiny camera bag that weighs almost "nothing". The only down side of
the proprietary battery is carrying the lightweight charger in addition
to the AAA/AA charger I also carry for other devices I carry while
traveling. If you're not traveling much, the larger camera may be better
for you.
I was looking at the Lumix (I can't help but read that as lummox) and the
Canon S5. Both are very nice cameras and are priced about the same.
I ended up getting the Canon as it has the hot shoe and uses AA batteries,
as opposed to the proprietary battery that Panasonic uses. Also, after
reading a few reviews of the cameras (dpreview the most thorough), the Canon
was rated a bit higher, despite the shorter lens, and has a better macro
feature. I also already own a Canon Powershot, so familiarity plays a part
too. I may not ever use the hot shoe, but I like having the option.
I haven't had a chance to try the Canon out yet, but I will today.
