Under XP, the DOS box is interpreted... meaning it is running ON TOP OF the XP operating system. Each instruction from a program running in this box is translated through XP, just like it would when you use a graphical interface. Maybe he meant that he can type commands faster in a command line interface. In this case, it would be slower for you, since you are not familiar with the old way of doing things in DOS.
