When was your Mac crashing and what kind of Mac? I still can't run Time Machine without my iMac G5 (the model just before they started installing the iSight camera) crashing. I called Apple and had the external drive reformatted to Jurnalled or something. Didn't fix the problem. And now my Apple Care is out of date.

Every few weeks, I get the blue screen notifying me of a crash dump. Maybe the computer has diarrhea:) Anyway, it restarts the computer. Why is it done
and is it necessary?

Very necessary. You are being punished for using Vista.

Something that happens so infrequently is going to be very hard to
address using "normal" troubleshooting methods. Instead I would note the
time that the crash dump was generated and then look through all the
system logs to see what messages were posted in the minutes just before
the crash dump.

This is easier to do if you can see all the logs at once. Can Vista do
that? Apple's latest OS just added that ability to its log viewer and it
is making my life a lot easier.

I recently had a driver-related problem on a Mac and with three crashes
to work on I noticed that a particular driver was being loaded just
before each crash. I quick call to the vendor confirmed it as a known
problem with a patch available.
