The problem I had last week getting my laptop to recognize an external hard 
drive (with no other power source other than the USB), turned out that it did 
indeed need a powered USB hub, since the laptop's USB wasn't giving enough 
juice.

We just purchased another drive (one of those LaCie Rugged, with the 
fluorescent orange rubber exteriors); it not only came with a USB transfer 
cable, but an additional cable that you can plug into your other USB connection 
to get enough power to run the drive.  So, somebody out there in design is 
aware of the problem...
