My recollection is that Apple owns the trademark on "Firewire", so other manufacturers have to call it IEEE-1394. Of course, it's easier to remember "Firewire" than it is to remember IEEE-1394, so all us humans call it "Firewire". Apparently, some manufacturers decided to come up with their own (vendor-specific) names, according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firewire
