Not sure if you ever solved your problem, but I've been hearing a lot about
Intel/AMD drivers that can cause the problem you described.

I had this same problem on my CompaQ Presario with AMD chip when I
put on the Release Candidate 2 of SP3 (I don't remember the Stop code
I had, and I can't find my notes from that incident). I was able to
back it off successfully. Then, when Microsoft came out with a
Refresh of Release Candidate 2, I tried it again, and it worked
perfectly. I was rather surprised that the released version was
having problems. Apparently, they must have changed something between
RC2 Refresh and release. Which I haven't received, yet. I don't know
if the Release Candidate version will block the Update version or not.
