Digital camera noise is highly consistent from pic to pic. Software can
profile it and remove it. Not so for film grain.
I LIKE grainy photos, and I like the flexibility of manual controls. I
"rolled my own" Tri-X for years. My favorite subjects are very low light
twilight photos, and bright sun photos with reflections, mirrors--B/W. I
can get a somewhat similar result with a digital camera, but the cameras
that can come closest are beyond my casual budget, especially since I
have two excellent analog SLRs and a collection of lenses. Lenses from
one SLR will fit a digital SLR, but not the other.
The main reason I switched to digital was for travel. SLRs are heavy and
don't fit into my pocket; carrying a big heavy SLR limits other luggage
considering the weight restrictions for both checked bags and
carry-ons. Small analog cameras don't take the same quality as good
small digital cameras.
