All;
Time for the Taylor household to do an audio-visual technology
refresh, and to do that I need a refresher from the knowledgeable
folks on this list.
What I currently have:
Comcast digital cable - the only broadband choice here in the sticks.
Don't really want to go satellite for TV as I would still need the
cable modem.
Comcast's crappy Scientific Atlanta DVR / cable box, one of the ones
with all the useful ports (USB, firewire, eSATA) disabled at the
firmware level.
An older but still quite decent standard definition TV in the playroom.
An Airport Extreme providing wireless to the house.
A drop ceiling downstairs, so running co-ax cable around is easy, and
I have and know how to use a couple hundred feet of it.
Several Mac laptops and one Mac Mini.
What I know I want:
A new widescreen TV upstairs.
The ability to record and watch on my own schedule HD programing
acquired via Comcast cable, DVD, or downloaded, upstairs.
The ability to shove some of it downstairs (in standard def) for the
kids - they don't get to pull it.
The ability to record said programming.
What I think I want:
Something like an Apple TV to manage the downstairs push or to enable
later additional screens - I like "it just works" appliances - I spend
far too much time at work with my head in the software guts of
enterprise stuff to want to tinker at home.
With the maze of stuff that is out there today, how do I get where I
want to go?
Thank you;
Matthew
