The Tivo was probably a good choice. I've never liked the fact that Tivo _has_ to go online, and that you have to pay for it every month. They should allow it to be programmed like a VCR. I had considered Tivo, Dish TV, and Eye TV for years but just kept putting off getting any kind of the new technology. I finally got the Eye TV 250plus a month or so ago, and put it on my iMac, and put the iMac on the coffee table in the living room. I haven't written to the list about it because the Eye TV has not been very reliable and I have not found the time to troubleshoot the problems. I do use it every day that I'm home. It's lots more fun to use than my regular TV and VCR setup. Once it's on and is decoding the analog cable the software works well. I can pause live TV and do something else for a while, and then come back when I've got enough time saved up that I can jump over stuff I don't want to see for the rest of the show. It also records a show while I watch something previously recorded. A big flaw is that sometimes when it has turned its self on, it will not see the cable signal. It will then dutifully record a black screen. If I am there to restart Eye TV, it will then see the signal and work fine. But the layout and function of the remote and the navigation of their system and a weak point as well. My brother has Direct or Dish TV, and I was pretty impressed a couple years ago by the DVR that came with his system and the layout of the remote and how well the system worked. Even a couple years later now, the Eye TV is pretty lame compared to that, and from what I've read, Tivo works even better than the satellite DVRs.

That's my report so far on Eye TV.

After some research and discussion with someone who had rolled their own (Myth TV etc.) I figured out that this would be the only way to get everything I wanted. I also realized that it was more work than I had time for.

Based on what people told me on this List I decided that the not too bad and very easy solution was a Tivo. I've had one for about 2 months now. In many ways it is not as good as my old Replay box, but it does have all the modern bells and whistles (HD, internet connection, sharing content between boxes, media downloads).
