No they require a subscription. Part of that is to pacify Hollyweed and the copyright nazis.

Even the ones from the satellite folks are not free your subscription is part of your satellite service.

Windows has a few programs and I believe Media Center was set up to record programs. But they are not as sophisticated as the TIVO or the Satellite DVR's are.

As long as Hollyweed controls our media they will make us pay for luxuries such as TIVO's.

Just to clarify:
Are you saying you think I could just buy a Tivo unit and never go on line with it or pay for their service, and just program it by start time and duration? Or something like that?

They should allow it to be programmed like a VCR.

You can do that. I have done that for programs that were not listed correctly by the programming service. This happens in times of special programming, like Olympics or political conventions. But it is so much easier to use the program grid. The Tivo also applies some intelligence when programmed via the grid. (I have not yet worked out the logic of what it does, but it does not literally follow the program grid.)
