I've never hear of a company other than Apple that combines a wireless/wired 
router
with a built in modem.

That looks like a smart solution to me. It doesn't even have to be an 
Airport. Other brands, if they have an Ethernet connection, will do the 
job.

I would not play around with USB. Ethernet is a more standard and 
flexible way to do this. With Ethernet you will even be able to add 
another computer without any trouble.
