It's possible, but I think unlikely that you'll see Windows 7 on the shelf next Christmas, so you're looking at two years. That's a long time in computers, and hardly makes the current Windows version "soon to be abandoned". Even if they do make the 10/1/09 release date, it's still a whole year away.
Besides, Windows 7 is to be based on Vista, so learning to use Vista now will give anyone a leg up on Win7. There's really nothing wrong with Vista, once one gets over any hardware trouble, which shouldn't be a factor in a new factory-built unit, especially a laptop. I just gave the wife a new HP x64 laptop for (early) Christmas, and she loves Vista.
