Hi Tony,

Most colleges and universities are wired (wireless, actually) these days
and the expectation is that kids bring a laptop to campus. The
professors post assignments on class websites and the kids do their
homework & papers ON THESE SITES and hit the submit button. (Actually,
my high-schooler does most of her homework that way now).

So where the "support" comes in is that many of these apps are based
on/built on Windows XP. If the student is having trouble accessing the
university's e-mail or web systems, the IT staff "supports" them in
terms of troubleshooting. They DON'T do this if you come with an
unsupported format (e.g., Vista).

So the student would then have to go to Microsoft to troubleshoot. Will
Microsoft techs talk to the college or university's IT folks? I don't
know but I tend to doubt it.

There's no link I can provide. They just tell you which OS they support.
And since most business & government users have not adopted Vista, most
colleges & universities have not either. Most of the
business/government/higher ed enterprises are running Windows XP and
have NOT migrated to Vista.

Sharon

Why would they 'support' a kid's laptop anyway? Do they send someone
out to fix it if it's got WinXP but not if it has Vista? Do you have a
link to their page that explains this?
