Agreed. They either want to sell you something or they wipe out any information you have and do a reload.

Find a local person who does work.

Not too long ago, even that was not good enough for one of my members.

My organist asked me what to do not so long ago, as their computer had died and the local shop told them they needed a new motherboard.

I told her let me look at the worst would happen is that I get her another motherboard.

Turns out they simply powered it up and told her she needed a new motherboard. The extra video card that had been added had fired the cooling fan and shorted. Replaced the video card and they were back up and running.

Based on my observations of the quality of service at the "big box" electronic chain stores, you might as well fold your money into the shape of a boat and set it adrift on the Potomac. Those folks are in the business of selling you new Stuff, not repairing anything. You would be much better off finding a local guy whose reputation can be checked. (just my opinion, of course)
