While it's been said here that firewire is best between external and
computer for the use of Time Machine, it wasn't mentioned that it's
necessary if you wish to put OS-X.5 on the external and start the
computer from the external OS. You can't boot from an external drive
that's only connected with USB2.

Sadly, Apple is walking away from FireWire. Their newest
laptops omit it.
Although FireWire continues to have many advantages over
USB2, USB2 is just good enough to get by. FireWire is
another great technology destroyed by our WFB's race to
the bottom.
Yes, Firewire is great. But I think you went a little far with
the previous sentence, instead of "USB2 is just good enough to
get by", I think that should read "USB2 is good enough". How
much does it cost a manufacturer for Firewire 400/800 versus
USB 2?
So if you are buying new drives make sure that USB2 is
included. It costs a bit more, but everything I have been
buying these last couple of years has both FireWire and
USB2.
Firewire seems to be getting rare.
