What will a terminator accomplish on the unused port?
I purchased a 3 way 1 in 1 out 3db 2 out 7db ...we'll see!!

I think all 2-ways are by default, balanced at 3.5db. You could try both
2-way and 3-way splitters and see what works better. The technicians at the
home office should be able to tell you what your signal strength is at your
modem. I don't know if putting a terminator on an unused splitter changes
anything. On my system, I use the one 7.0db output and run that to a
distribution amplifier/splitter for the TV's. The second 7.0db output is
unused and unterminated. Signal strength at the modem is adequate, according
to tech support.

Keep in mind that nothing will be as good as a single dedicated line going
to the modem as you did when you put the barrel connector in place of the
splitter. There's always some compromise.
