Linux does it right, I think. I understand that if one attempts an
operation that requires admin or root permissions, one gets a prompt to
enter a password before the command will execute. The command doesn't
just fail with no or some cryptic error message.
That's correct. It doesn't happen automatically though. A small bit of
configuration is needed (usually happens when the program in question
is installed as part of a package, so in 99% of the cases, this config
is done for you). ... for those of you curious about how this happens,
read the man page for "consolehelper".
