Poor Lauren was never told about TCO. Having bought a big mistake she will be forever pouring money into it. She will grow poorer and poorer and will be forced to make poorer and poorer choices about computers in the future. Eventually in desperation she will get a an iTouch running OS X becaue that is all she could afford. The lightbulb will start to glow. She will be more productive. She will get a better job. Her finances will improve. She will be able to get that laptop with the big screen.
