Can anyone recommend a "beginners" graphics layout program for the Apple
platform that is equivalent in simplicity and ease of use as MS Publisher?

There are several good choices that run on Leopard.

"Pages" is part of Apple's $80 iWork suite.

"The Print Shop 2.0" from Software MacKiev is $59.

"Swift Publisher 2.2" is $40.

All 3 have trial versions to download.

All above are good choices. Any are an improvement over MS Publisher. MS Publisher is hideous.

Pages is OK, as is Swift Publisher. You also may want to look at the open source Scribus, http://www.scribus.net/.

For drawing, do you need illustration [vector] or image editing? For image editing, GIMP is a good open source program. Freeverse [home of Jared, SimStapler, SoundStudio, Monty and Jen] has an interesting program called Lineform that's quite good, and easy, http://www.freeverse.com/apps/app/?id=6020. Have you looked at Google's SketchUp [Pro]? EazyDraw [long trial license for testing]?

If you just need the bare basics and still have AppleWorks, it runs OK in Leopard.
