The reason I asked this is because a couple times a year, I'll get a
publisher document. I have to use MS Windows (I use Virtual PC, since
I have a PPC based Mac) in order to open it. I'm just trying to
avoid MS Windows. If I had an Intel based Mac, I'd still be trying
to avoid using MS Windows. If I open it with Publisher using Virtual
PC I can make it into a PDF, but I'm trying to avoid opening it with
Publisher using Virtual PC in the first place. Is there a Publisher
reader for the Mac?

Anything you can do in MS Publisher you can do as well, actually better, in Word. Neither is WYSIWYG, but at least Word has standards. If you can get your clients/friends to give you Word documents instead, that's the better solution. Publisher is yet another example of Microsoft copying good programs, doing it very poorly, and making output proprietary so that it won't work with any other program or platform--and it can't produce a output for quality printing. Is that killing their competition, or shooting themselves in the foot/head, or plain incompetence, appealing to customers who don't have a reason to know better? At least Quark XPress and Adobe InDesign can import each others' files, and they're designed for real publishing. Pages can output PDFs.

I've found that most Windows programs run very well in emulation. I used Virtual PC from v.2 through its demise [by Microsoft, naturally]. Darwine is a good solution too. It's not an emulator. It will run Windows programs without installing or running Windows by providing the APIs instead of the full OS.

This is the Microsoft "solution", http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/publisher/HA102339061033.aspx. It might even work in WINE or Darwine. You'll like it. It involves downloading a free trial version of Pubisher, then throwing it away before it expires.

Free is good [donate if you like the programs]! For Intel Macs, use WINE, http://www.winehq.org/. For PPC Macs, use Darwine, http://darwine.sourceforge.net/download.php
