I submit that this is exactly what the issue is and he is being polite. I doubt the man is a complete idiot and has done some research as to what things cost. All you have to do is walk through a Best Buy to get the picture. FWIW, my experience is polar opposite of yours. I recommend Dell to those who ask and often I'm asked about Macs. I tell them to use what they're comfortable with; a computer is a tool, not a fashion statement or position on culture. Not once have I been told, "I want to use what everyone else uses," which makes me wonder how much of your story is reality-based.
