Never used Carbonite and I'm not sure why but when I tried Mozy on two different computers (one OSX Tiger, one XP Pro) at two different locations, the initial upload failed midstream (after a week or so of uploading the initial multiple GBs) with an cryptic error message and would not resume again without starting all over again. Never did figure it out in either case. Just moved to Amazon S3/ Jungledisk ( 15 cents/ GB/ mo.) which is truly a great software and service. A much better/ more user friendly/ more featured software, web and reporting interface and services (file sharing and networked drives are options), and MUCH faster upload times. Not one glitch yet in 6 months of use on either machine.

I guess you get what you pay for. We're paying more for Jungle Disk but it works, works, works....

My thought initially with Mozy was: EMC, (Mozy's parent company) is huge in the corporate backup world so that is reassuring re: function and permanence and "so what if it takes a month to upload the initial backup"... for $5 / mo I will thereafter have a serviceable backup. Not sure what went wrong ... twice ... but for $5 and 30 mins of setup time you can give it a whirl yourself .... not much to lose... If it works, you've got a deal.

For a fee Mozy has the capability of sending you your restore on a disk or hard drive. A good feature in case of calamity and you don't want to wait for weeks for a total restore. Does Carbonite do something similar?

Carbonite is 55 a year and Mozy has a home unlimited but I do not
think they would like my over 100GB work files done this way. Their
monthly amount is much higher than carbonite.

What experiences have you had with them?

I had Carbonite for a year and dumped it the minute my renewal came up. It
backed up OK, and the interface is OK, but it took FOREVER to restore.
Carbonite doesn't restore immediately but schedules it
for later delivery. Apparently the basis for the schedule is "as soon as we feel
like it". That turned out to be never less than an hour, and in one case it was
nearly 8 hours.

Haven't tried Mozy. I switched to SOS (http://www.sosonlinebackup.com/).
