Tom is right in a way that conservatives have been wanting for a long time, but Mike is wrong--it's everybody's money except the wealthiest people who remain mostly untaxed. Social Security and Medicare are flat taxes, no exceptions, just what they love. However, there's a huge exception that needs to be corrected. Conservatives can have their flat tax, and everybody gets to pay tax on all of their income--no loopholes.

I think it's now a combined 15% tax [7-1/2% each for employer and employee, or all 15% for self-employed]. By increasing the ceiling to include all income over $100,000 too, the tax could be lowered, both Social Security and Medicare will be solvent long into the future, and the conservatives will get their wish for a flat tax that's lower than it is now. Works for everyone.

Brilliant! Socialism is great till you run out of everyone elses money.
