The basic concept is sending and receiving email. And yes, nowadays AJAX browser clients can do that as well as any local client like Eudora.
Now, when you start talking about specific services such as gmail, it's almost a different subject, because it does some things Eudora can't do easily - like store all your stuff in the cloud. OTOH, gmail still won't detach and delete attachments. Cloud storage itself is a different subject. Recently a court ordered Google to pull the plug on a gmail account (apparently only because the guy ignored his spam), and this means the account holder suddenly has no/limited access to his stored emails (depending on his offline settings). Of course, if you're using IMAP and Eudora and the same thing happened to you, you would be in the same situation.
