Eudora simply connects and then disconnects.

Maybe this is just a Mac thing, but my email client does not have to be online when I'm reading and responding to email. While it is online it synchs a local copy of my emails from the primary copy stored in the cloud. I can read these emails and respond offline. Next time I am online it will again sync up with the cloud.

This seems to me to be the best of all worlds. I have 3 computers where I typically get my email and while traveling I use webmail. I can sit down at any of these 3 computers and always find my email identically arranged. I have rule sets on my main office computer, which I usually leave on all the time. It sorts incoming mail into folders and I can access them so arranged from any other computer.
