I think it is fairly clear that many of these super well-heeled residents of that school district are primarily worried about protecting their property values that are inherently connected to the reputation of the school district in which they reside and own property. That is why they just want the controversy to just go away. Indeed, many families moved to that county and school district specifically to take advantage of that school system in terms of how it props up property values as well as grinding out students who matriculate to Ivy League universities in large numbers. As you pointed out, many do not give a rats ass as long as it does not involved one of their kids.
