Thanks for your comments, John. I'm a little hesitant to suggest this, because I think this feature should always be on; browsers should always make the URL visible when following a link. That said, a way to reduce the risk of introducing this feature is to enable the binding dynamically (see the reference below). That way (if it defaults off) there is no change to the minibuffer unless it's enabled.
