As to the election of 1824, Paul Finkleman wrote:

Clay was 4th in electoral votes (37 v. 41 for Crawford), but was 3d in popular votes -- See Historical Statistics of the United States, p. 1074.

Jackson led Adams 99-84 in electoral votes, and 154, 000 -105, 000 in popular votes.
