As a bitter ender, I am reconciled neither to Bush v. Gore nor the Bush presidency. That being said, one must recognize that electoral strategies--and I suspect this was the case even in 1824--are planned in terms of the fact that we have the electoral college and not popularly elected presidents. I don't recall, for example, that the Bushies did very much with regard to maximizing the voter turnout in Texas, since they scarcely worried about losing the state, and I assume that the same was true for Democrats in a number of the "blue states."
