Position for Conservator (Objects), Heritage Conservation Centre at the National Heritage Board of Singapore
The National Heritage Board (NHB) is recruiting a Conservator (Objects) for the objects conservation team. The team is part of the Heritage Conservation Centre (HCC) under NHB. Responsibilities: Carry out conservation assessments, documentation and treatments on artworks and artefacts from the national collections according to HCC and NHB procedures, instructions and guidelines for exhibits, loans and events at the institutions of NHB and partners Manage exhibition projects as liaison officer to cover conservation-related parts of exhibition preparations including preventive conservation like: Participate in meetings, preparing agendas prior to meetings and notes/minutes of meeting Provide advice on preventive care, specialized mounting techniques and environmental settings for short or long term display of artefacts/artworks Review temporary and permanent display upon request to ensure stability of artefacts and eventual maintenance needs Provide advice on transport, handling and display requirements whenever necessary Perform and assist in exhibition-related tasks such as packing/unpacking for installation/de-installation Write project closure reports Perform relevant conservation analysis and tests in contributing to the preservation and conservation knowledge of the NHB collections Work on any other ah-hoc duties and projects assigned, which may be conservation or institutional based May be involved in conservation study or research projects including publication Contribute to upgrading and maintenance of conservation lab Participate as a member in work groups to work on specific topics related to conservation or institutional excellence Provide close supervision and training on the job to subordinates and others Lead or participate in outreach activities that cater to a wide variety of audience groups, special interest groups and the public in order to promote awareness of conservation Participate in and contribute to institutional team activities Carry out administrative work as needed by adhering to rules, regulations and code of conduct of Singapore Public Service Requirements: Degree in Conservation with 6 to 8 years of relevant practical experience. Institutional/public experience preferred Ability to carry out comprehensive treatments with a high degree of manual dexterity and aesthetic sensitivity Familiarity and experience with cultural materials in South East Asia will be advantageous Possess a wide exposure in handling multi-cultural materials with sensitivity and demonstrate relevance in making sound contextual judgements in applying conservation principles and practices Possess initiative with ability to multi-task, organise and prioritise work in given timeline Keep up to date with current conservation development through self-directed learning and training. Evidence of continual professional development is strongly desirable Ability to work unsupervised and a strong team player Ability to coach and impart conservation skills and knowledge effectively Relevant in-house trainings will be provided to the successful candidate.
