Ok! The final MMG Autumn Talk is now live!

We're delighted to have Brenda Keneghan presenting a personal history of
plastics conservation.

Over the last 30 years, Brenda has borne witness to changing attitudes towards
plastic heritage and its preservation. This presentation looks at some of those
changes and gives a eyewitness accounting of the evolution of a specialism.

A unique opportunity to learn the history of Plastics Conservation from one of
the discipline's great researchers.

Tickets free for Icon members, £10 for non.  Recordings will be circulated
after the event.

Call for Papers: Icon Photographic Materials Group Lightning Talks 2025

Wednesday 10th December 2025, 10 am - 1 pm GMT

The Icon Photographic Material Group is bringing back the Lighting Talks to
close the year.

The format will be online, and presenters will have five minutes to share their
topics. As is customary, there will be space afterwards for questions and
ponderings. As always, the event is open to anyone with an interest in the care
and preservation of photographic materials.

We invite you to submit a titled abstract (c.100 words) with your name,
affiliation and time zone and/or location to [email protected] by Friday, 21st
of November.

Subject summiting can range from treatment practices, preventive conservation,
scientific research, education, outreach and funding, but is not limited to
these topics. We encourage you to present outside this scope if your topic
doesn't fit any of these categories but is related to the conservation of
photographic materials.

The 5-minute presentations should include around five PowerPoint slides, which
should be illustrative rather than textual.

Please contact us via email at [email protected] as soon as possible for
further details or to discuss your idea.

Subject: RE: Recommendations for Re-gilding Techniques for Porcelain?
 Message: Hi Halina,

Some time ago, Professor Jonathan Thornton introduced an effective method for
replacing losses on glass and porcelain by applying gold leaf over a residual
film of 5‑minute epoxy resin. The process is straightforward: apply a very thin
layer of 5‑minute epoxy to the designated clean area of the glass or porcelain
surface, then quickly wipe it off well with a clean cloth. Next, apply the gold
leaf, allow the resin residue to settle for 5–10 minutes, and polish with
cotton wool to remove any excess of gold leaf. It is important to work quickly,
as the resin begins to set within five minutes. The method is also effective
for replacing gold leaf in high‑gloss gilding on other polished surfaces.

If you would like to discuss this further, please feel free to contact me by
email.

Good luck,

Malgorzata (Margaret)

Subject: Recommendations for Re-gilding Techniques for Porcelain?

Hi there,

I am currently working on a partially gilded Meissen tea caddy at the Cooper
Hewitt with discrete areas of loss and abrasion to the gilded borders. I'm
wondering if anyone has had any success with techniques for re-gilding as loss
compensation on porcelain that they would be willing to share. I have made some
porcelain mockups for testing specifically for this project, and I plan to
share the results of these tests after the project is complete. If you have any
suggestions these will be credited to you in the write-up. Thanks so much in
advance for your help with this!
