It appears that contrib is not well integrated into SME server.
More work needs to be done to improve it.
You can force a startup at reboot as follows.
pico -w /etc/rc.d/rc.local
Add the following line to the end of the file
/etc/rc.d/init.d/gwd start
Save & exit
Ctrl o
Ctrl x
Reboot your server to prove gwd starts correctly
