I had a further look after not finding a service entry named gwd.
The contrib adds a service called geneweb to the configuration db.
By default status is set to disabled.
So correct SME usage is to do
config setprop geneweb status enabled
signal-event post-upgrade
signal-event reboot
If you followed the earlier advice to edit /etc/rc.d/rc.local you should remove
the entry you made as that is really a brute force workaround to start the
service in a non SME standard way.
