SMP detection is most likely flakey on PPC.  I've never had access to an
SMP machine to fix it, so the SMP kernel doesn't get installed
automagically like it should.  It should be on your CD's though:

kernel-smp-2.4.18.6.1mdk-1-1mdk.ppc.rpm
